Hi Alex,

Welcome to the list!

Thank you for the URL. I actually wrote to the guy last night and told
him I was not going to do the project. I also sent him some snippets of
the list's comments about the site. He wrote back that he appreciated
my honesty and would pass the feedback on to the higher-ups.

Dear Hardnose Tim ;-) ,

The fact that so many programs have spell checkers today makes it even
more inexcusable. I heard from a HR person once that, when they post a
job, if any of the resumes have typos or spelling mistakes on them (in
the cover letter), they don't even bother looking at the resume. They
toss it right away.

 I would optimize their website,
submit it to search engines, etc.

your first order of business is to write the clause

results in a non-subjective manner

Define results... if the target is to get your client a top ten listing on
Google for a search on real estate, you could be in for a rough ride :-)

How much to charge? Not sure, but if you hit your results you should be paid a
lot more than you would have charged had you billed this by the hour.

You've seen The Sting, right?

Sounds to me like they're looking for someone to work for free, and
what certainty would you have that they would pay...who's to judge
whether the results they get will be 'good enough' for them to pay
you anything? Regardless of what you actually charge in the end, which
of course we can't discuss, I would ask them for a nominal payment up
front even if its only a quarter of what you expect to get in the end.

that is true, but they will get even better results if

again, you need to say what better and results

2005-11-17 Thread Jon Haworth
Riva,

They feel that if they get traffic to their site it won't
matter what it looks like - I don't know if I agree with that.

I think your client is wrong.

If I'm looking to buy a widget, I'll visit a bunch of widget-selling sites. At
each one I'll expect to be able to find the particular widget I want quickly,
and I'll want to see whether it's in stock, how much it costs, and what the
delivery time is. If one of these sites is badly designed and makes it
difficult for me to actually do what I want, I'll stare at the homepage for a
couple of seconds and then click Back.

I suppose if their business is one of a kind or has an outstanding reputation
in their particular area then it's a different story, but if they're competing
in a crowded market they'd better make it as easy as they can for their
customers to give them money.

Cheers

You might ask them to have someone objectively review their site.
It comes across as unprofessional to me.
I found four typos while reading just two pages.
Additionally, the homepage content is hard to understand.
They have a link claiming valid XHMTL but if you click it,
the result reveals quite explicitly that the page does not validate.
Who's telling the truth, and who's not?
When I used their search tool to search for the word window I got this:

window.document.getElementById(’post-2′).parentNode.className += ‘
adhesive_post’;
There are literally hundreds of window companies with thousands of
salespeople.

Maybe they aren't getting much business because their site doesn't generate
much credibility.

Unless there's something I'm not seeing or not

RE: [wdvltalk] Website optimization question - kinda

2005-11-17 Thread Steven Olson

They feel that if they get traffic to their site
it won't matter what it looks like

I think they're crazy to say this. For something as common as windows, a
prospect will comparison shop. A bad website = lack of credibility. Their
site is not good.

FWIW, I would close the tab on this site as soon as I saw the get a quote
page. I will not communicate through a web form unless the company has a
monopoly on a product or service that I *REALLY* want. On top of that, the
quote form is simply an add me to your mailing list form, since there is
no data about the windows being quoted (unless it's on a secondary page).
The website is also a bit hard to read due to lack of paragraphs, etc.;
again, I'd simply go somewhere else.

Good Luck
/steven

Re: [wdvltalk] Website optimization question - kinda

2005-11-17 Thread Portman

Thanks Steven.

I remember getting into an e-discussion about websites on a soaping
e-mail group. One person claimed that it didn't matter if there were
spelling mistakes or typos on her site, it was the product that people
came for. I countered that typos and spelling mistakes make a statement
about the effort that person puts into things - if they don't care that
the website has errors, will they care if the soap is substandard?

Hey Perry,

Why do need to install a Japanese language pack to read your mail?Is
there something we should be told? ;-)

When I used their search tool to search for the word window I got this:

window.document.getElementById(’post-2′).parentNode.className += ‘
adhesive_post’;
There are literally hundreds of window companies with thousands of
salespeople.

Maybe they aren't getting much business because their site doesn't
generate

much credibility.

I agree Jon. They sell replacement windows. The website
(for those who
are interested) is www.zenwindows.com. The guy told me that they are
not having a lot of people fill out their online form. Well,
it took me
a few minutes to find the link to it!!

Thanks,

I want quickly, and I'll want to see whether it's in stock,
how much it
costs, and what the delivery time is. If one of these sites is badly
designed and makes it difficult for me to actually do what I
want, I'll
stare at the homepage for a couple of seconds and then click Back.

I suppose if their business is one of a kind or has an outstanding
reputation in their particular area then it's a different
story, but if
they're competing in a crowded market they'd better make it
as easy as
they can for their customers to give them money.

Honestly, I don't know what's going on.
I was in the middle of typing that email when suddenly the font changed.
This is in plain-text format so I'm rather baffled.
I'm gonna run the Stinger and see if it turns up anything.
