The problem is that, yes, the controls are there, yes, you can get a mixer control

FYI:
I have been playing around with different mixer programs and the found that
the text-based alsamixer *can* control the output level of the MP3+

does "PCM" or "PCM 1", and there is no "master" or "line in" control.

Has anybody managed to get an FM device to work with the ALSA cmipci driver? I
have a CMI8738 card and have tried endless permutations of kernel version,
alsa version, config options and MIDI players and nothing seems to work. Or,
at least, everything works, but there's never any sound produced.
cally working, use alsamixer in a terminal.
Depending on your card, there might be many many sliders but at first you
probably only need pcm and the main volume.

When I am using emu10k1 OSS driver,
I can edit /etc/emu10k1.conf to disable the front analog channels +12dB
boost.
Without doing this, the volume is too high and the sound quality is bad.
Is there any way to do this for ALSA driver?

I expect it should be as loud as in M$ windows.
Well if I disabled the +12dB boost in OSS driver,
I got the same volume as in M$ windows.
