There are three 'folds' IIRC that MQA makes to the file, two of which
can be unfolded by software and the third fold requires MQA hardware.
It is a solution to a problem that really no longer exists for most of
us - they were trying (in 2013) to reduce the size of high quality files
like FLAC
I also notice the E30 display will not switch off when the Touch EDO is
off no matter what settings I choose. It worked properly with an SB3.

Yes that is pretty much it. A 24/96 FLAC file is about three times the
size of a 16/44.1 file and about twice the size of a 24/48 file.

I use a Audio Synthesis DAX Discrete for my TP and previously the SB£.

Platinum/Sutherland Ph.D to the FLAC files via Transporter (my passion

The 1's and 0's are not the problem - converting them to analogue is!
The SB3 has an onboard DAC and built to a price. External DAC's usually
have no such limitations.

The SB3 will only do 24/48 regardless of f/w - I have 81 installed. My
24/96 FLAC files play at 24/48. The Transporter does do 24/96 according
to the specs.

Interesting as the only reason I am contemplating buying a Transporter
is for the 24/96 capability (I use an external DAC). Maybe SD are
deliberately clamping down the resoultion to avoid impacting TP sales.

I am not seeing a problem with 24/96 FLAC on my SB3 but then I do not
use the screensavers - just artist name and the small graphic analyser.
I will try playing a file with the VU meters on and see what happens.

In my case my 44.1k/24 FLAC files will not be recognised by Nero or any
CD player and will only play on a PC or when burned to DVD-A. The Red
Book (CD audio standard) is 44.1k/16 bit.

Mine has been on non-stop since I built it (March). Case temperature
with SB3 in standby is currently 34c. If your case temperature is in or

No. The Theta CD transport runs balanced into the Audio Synthesis DAX
Discrete and has no analog outs. DAX runs balanced to the pre-amp and
power amp.

I have a $10k CD player and the SB3 (albeit with a linear PSU costing
$80) sounds just as good when both are fed through the same external
DAC. Result is the CD player is no longer used.
Vinyl still sounds way better than either, obviously!

It is considered good engineering practice to double the supply capacity
to what is required. Reduces stress on components and gives plenty of
headroom. A 3a PSU is probably about right for best performance.

My SB3 runs into an Audio Synthesis DAX Discrete and the results are
very good indeed. Locks on to 44.1khz, upsamples and is off. Never had
any problem.

measurement was at the 5v side of the PSU I built. Varied
between 0.8a (standby clock display) and 1.3a (playing into digital
out) if I recall correctly. Happy to do a second set of measurements if
it is of value?
