only on records. Of course the aggravation of dealing with them,
plus the inferior sound quality discourages me from pulling them out of
the closet. If I could substantially improve the sound I would be
listening to them a lot more.

VTL is pretty sure it is a problem with the tubes in the output stage. I
am buying a pair of tubes from them that they will screen for noise.

they are tricky
to integrate into a system. I really don't want to make it a career to
continuously fiddle with the system to get it to sound right. On the
other hand, if I only need to be careful about using an amp with a high
input impedance (mine is 100K), I'd still be interested in them.

be fussy. Some people are saying that they only sound
good over a limited range of volume settings. Others are saying you need
ultra-low capacitance cables.
Does anybody have experience using one in their system?

it somewhat? To be honest, I don't even
know which camp I prefer to be in (analytical vs. tube sound).
Anyway, I guess the best thing is to listen to as many as I can before
making a purchase. But they are not readily available to test drive like
we can a new car.

hearing it first. The only one I auditioned so far was a used
Mark Levinson 36s. It sounded weak in the mid-range and upper bass. Not
as warm as the Apollo. So, the search is still on.

if the Lavry has a different tonality than your Rega?

Hi SC53. I never heard of Electrocompaniet before. Did you audition it
before you bought it? If so where? I can't find any dealers in the
Northeast that carries them. How does it compare to the Benchmark?

Hi Anne. The Apollo uses a Wolfson WM8740 sigma-delta converter.
Stereophile measured the Apollo's noise at -90dB and the distortion at
-80dB.

and then sell the Apollo. From what I've experienced
(see above), almost any DVD/CD player paired with a good DAC will
produce a very good sound.
