is anyone playing with XCB yet? Looks like a better version than the current

Well, I was recently reminded of Mame, and access to many ROMs. So, I was
wondering if anyone here had tried building Xmame on an LFS/BLFS box?
I'm fetching the source and will see how it goes.

These are just the comments of someone who's read about back-up solutions, but
never use them myself, so take what I say with a pinch of salt. I'm sure
others here have much more experience with backups and can offer their input
as well.

I'm sure developers understand the documentation provided, but us mere

Thank you, Simon, for this explanation. :)

Yes, thank you for the detailed explanation! That's why I joined the
LFS/CLFS/BLFS community. It's the best place to advance your knowledge of
computer programming and OS operation.
Shame the developers of those tools couldn't expl

I guess it's a good thing a search box is added to the LFS pages.

As I said, I've had this problem before but I don't remember what the solution

Sun's java, without Sun's restrictive licence. I haven't used it myself, I
don't mind Sun's licence. Also, GCC does provide some java functionality with
gcj. Not sure how that would fit into the picture, though.

I knew that this situation has changed in the intervening times, but just
mentioned it in case this issue crops up again.

You could try just installing the binary version of JDK and see if it works.
But this could cause problems if the binary is compiled with a different
toolchain than the current LFS is using.

I once built and installed a new GlibC on a Debian system, without updating
the rest of the tool chain, while I was drunk and wondered why the new system
didn't work.

rience that even an ordinary LFS/BLFS running a
KDE desktop is quicker than the Debian system I used to use. So if the uClibc
thing doesn't work out, using LFS/BLFS is still a bit quicker than most
distro's.

too. I use
LFS instead because I felt LFS was much more hands-on with better
opportunities to learn whereas Gentoo seems very scripted and automated in
comparison. However, I can see where Gentoo would be better used than LFS for
these very reasons.

LFS, there is no 'right way' to build your desktop, there's just too
many options. Pick what you want, find out what that needs and install your
desktop from the ground up.
Hope this gives you some ideas and points you in the right direction.

probably could be built smaller, but tracing all the dependencies would
give the average person a serious headache.
For small, I'd go with xfce, dillo or firefox for browsing and what ever else
you think you need.
But that's just my thoughts on the matter.

In the end, Declan has got something working that he understands. It might not
be the 'optimum' way, or even the 'linux' way, but it's 'Declans' way and
he's happy with it.
