There is obviously an established user base and corporate interests that

Those have been available. Basically, the DTV decoder box has a S-Video
output that you can plug into an analog TV.
The whole point of this proposal is to kill those boxes because you can just

Nope. I ended up just turniing the drive on before I turned on my main
