I ended up overriding NSDocumentController's typeForContentsOfURL:
which seems to default to something different than what NSWorkspace
calculates. Instead, I tested for a file path and then call
NSWorkspace's routine on that path.

(http://sparkle.andymatuschak.org/). This is a simple to use framework
that makes adding automatic update support as easy as possible. It
also handles the specific case of getting authorization to replace the
application.
