No, it appears that you will be able to do an in-place upgrade from Vista,
but not from XP. If you have XP, a clean install will be required.

However I always take a computers shop recommendation with a grain of salt.
Last year one of my members got her system back after being told she
needed to replace the motherboard.
I opened it replaced the video card and she is still using it.
He said it not me.
However they have usually done this type of free upgrade and most
software sellers do it as an inducement to get them to keep buying
before a new release comes out.
