Thanks for the script!
One issue I didn't see mentioned here: I get question marks instead of
all non-latin characters (cyrillic, hebrew) in song titles, album
titles and genres. Any hope?

I created a beta4 version with some bug fixes which apparently causes
the script to run slowly for some :-(
I restored beta3 so if you download it again i guess the 'run slowly'
problems should be gone.
I will take a close look into the problem this afternoon.

Thanks for checking it out. :) Seems like the hardware of later boxes
made it easier (more time to spend) to take care of stuff on the fly
without worrying much ... I'm glad the legacy boxes SB1 aren't getting
left in the dust the way Microsoft built operating systems that are
even too big to load

cached as much if you are using a skin other than Default or Classic,

The problem has always been database queries that take too long. They
are not asynchronous and cannot be 'paused' to wait for other events.

Woops, in my haste and excitement to try editing the conf I forgot to
backup the original settings! DOH! Would have been nice to flip back
and see what was working with the decrypted m4a files vs the iTunes
Plus files!

I'm still getting the error, but I worked out my other problem, so it
may be moot.
I figured out how to get it to scan updated iTunes stuff; I believe
this error might not affect it. If it does, then I will try
uninstalling McAfee and checking that out. Thanks for taking the time

I still think it could be wireless issues. If you can, move your SB1
and try ethernet even just for a few minutes to see if that's part of
the problem. Your neighbor could have just setup a wireless network on
the same channel as yours, or something.

reason you only have a problem with the web UI is that the database
queries to build the web interface are much more complex than to build
the player interface

Edit the server.prefs file and change 3 lines, all close together. Look
for the bindAddress. Change from 127.0.0.1 to your servers IP. Also add
the server ip to the allowedHosts line.

OK, your server certainly seems powerful enough to handle that.
You should at least try ethernet just to see if the problem is
wireless. The SB1 only has 802.11b and streaming 1.4mbps over that is
pushing the limits. The max you can expect from 802.11b is around
4mbps I think.

Heh, I just fixed a bug in the web search page where it wasn't sharing
time properly while building the result list. My SB1 now handles an
advanced search just fine, even a horrible one like the bitrate
example.

Wow...thats a thread thats a tad bit confusing. But I think I got a bit
of troubleshooting info that might help. When I play the .m4a files in
Quicktime they sound exactly like they do when played over the SB. Same
exact glitches and drop outs.

I haven't used my SB1 for some time now but from what I can recall the
behaviour you are seeing is quite normal.
The buffer in the SB1 is much smaller than the SB2/3 and is of the
order of a few seconds of music for flac (which will be transcoded to
wav), probably 10 times that for mp3.

Only problem is with FLAC files.
Breaks in playback occur when using the Search, Advanced search and
Status options. With the Status option playback works ok with FLAC
files until the web browser does a re-fresh of the screen

My guess is that making everything uppercase removes weird
Back in April some Vista users had similar problems with m4a files ( see

It seemed to be related to Quicktime although you do not have problems
when playing through iTunes.
The solution in April was to stop using mov123 (which uses Quicktim

I recall some issues with Quicktime stuttering being sorted by changing
it's default bit-depth from 24 to 16. There may be an upgrade with
Itunes 7.2(?) which fixes this.

I suspect that the SB remembers the WAP it was first connected to
(unlike the little portable internet radio I have just bought, which I
am told connects to the best WAP available at the time it is turned

I think it comes down to something very simple - respecting the artist.
As someone who creates copyrighted works for a living (software in my
case, but it's the same as music, painting or literature - all of which
my family is involved with) I strongly believe that if someone creates

m4a files have toe transcoded on the server before they play - so if
there are problem, it is most likely a server issue.
What is your server system spec, the OS and SS version ?
If it is Windows based - what version of Quicktime is installed and
what security s/w are you using.

I have one WLAN with one SSID, but two WAPs. I've been having some annoying
dropouts and performance issues with one of the Squeezeboxes, and when I
went to Information : Player found it was at only 35-40% wireless signal,
even though it was in the same room as one of the WAPs. So I turned tha
I bought three albums from the iTunes Plus store (i.e higher quality and
no DRM). Two of them play back fine on the SB, one wont, it just jitters
and starts and stops on every song. Their all the same 256Kb bit rate
etc.
It plays fine in iTunes and on my iPod, just wont stream from Slim to
the SB

The only reason that work's at all is because it is possible to apply
security measures to the media, and a lot of people are not
sufficiently knowledgeable or motivated to seek ways to circ
...and another thought; presumeably it picks up the "Artist" field from
the db when it runs? Can it be tweaked to use whatever SS calls
"Artist Sort"?

It's been about 18 months since I've posted here...
I'm getting audio dropouts that are driving me crazy. Sometimes I'll
go weeks without an issue, and sometimes I'll get them constantly for
days. It's gotten to the point that I'll reboot my computer server,

6.2.2 to SC7 is a large jump.
The database backend of SlimServer changed from SQLite to MySQL in
6.5.x, this increased the memory requirements on systems. You might
want tothink about upping that 512MB of RAM in your server
Personally I would try SC7 and if you have any problems, report the
bugs

I have two Squeezeboxes, one in my living room and one in the bed room.
The one in the bed room I use as an alarm clock. Since I upgraded to

iPeng is a skin for SqueezeCenter 7. AFAIK it comes with good documentation
which should cover installation, too.
