Update: It looks like a hardware prob of the SB3 (Classic) as the phenomenon does not happen on the Touch I have replaced it with. Changing the power supply on the SB3 did also not change the behaviour of the box - so I fear it is just dead/dying. If I find anything I´ll update this post --

You guys were right. I placed a bid on a local second hand SBv3 with power supply. Once I got it, I connected the "new" power supply to my own SB, it powered on instantly. I have used my setup since 2007. I never had any issue whatsoever. The reason I "acted drastically". :) ---

Yes, very likely (for having fixed more than a few) at least one of the electrolytic capacitors is defective. It manifests either by a randomly rebooting classic or a channel distorted, mute or quiet. You can replace maybe one or two capacitor, but others will fail soon. See other posts where I h

I've got an SB3 that seems to be in good working order, except that IR blaster is not able light up IR diodes plugged into the headphone jack. I'm assuming it's probably the capacitors, but replacing those is beyond my soldering skills. --
