The link in the email you sent is similar to what I did. It did not work with
the original LCD. Putting a white sheet behind the original LCD did nothing
as it was opaque. I had to get a transreflective one, the key here is it's
translucent to permit back-lighting. It was long ago and I

If you can't find a kit: I modded my K1 to illuminate the LCD back in '03,
before the mod kit was available. It's pretty easy to do (a white sticker, two
leds, and a resistor) and works very well, but it does require a
transreflective LCD in place of the original reflective one supplied back
Good evening all,
I’m looking for a LCD backlight kit for the K1. I don’t see it listed on the
Elecraft site anymore and am kicking myself for not picking one up sooner.
If anyone has a kit that is no longer needed, I would be interested. Please
contact me off-list.

Does anyone have suggestions for installing the backlight mod in the K1? Which
is best, 2 ma or 6 ma configuration? Has anyone installed a switch to turn it
on or off?

George,
If you operate mostly on battery, use the 2ma. option, otherwise I would
use the 6 ma. for its extra brightness - but best is to install it
initially for 2 ma, and then look at it to see if you think it is bright
enough.
I don't think there is room for a switch.

I used the lower brightness level and it works great. The power draw is minimal

I am getting ready to install my backlight on my unbuilt K1. Step #1 is
³flush-trim all component leads which are located BETWEEN the two rows of
LCD PC board pads...²
Does this mean to flush-trim the pins of the U1 HOLDER? These pins are only
1 mm above the board. Am I really supposed to try to
Paul,
Use flush cutters and trim them as close as you can. Yes, that 1mm
matters. If you do not trim them, the LCD will contact the metalwork on
the front panel assembly and may break when you put things all together.

I've reached the point in assembling my K1 where I install the backlight kit
and have a few questions:
1. I assume that the black neoprene LCD spacer that comes with the K1 is not
used when the backlight kit is installed? In other words, the only items under
the LCD will be the insulator card
I have finally started to install this kit as I needed to pop the rig open to

Yes, you are missing that part. You will need to contact Elecraft and
ask for the missing piece - on the contact page at Elecraft site look
for the e-mail for missing and spare parts request.

Hi everybody,
I have just ordered the backlight mod kit for my K1 (#01755, 40-30-20-15 m).
Because of the time honored adage of if it aint broke, don't fix it, I
always get a little nervous about doing rework. Are there any special

Hi folks,
just built the K1 backlight mode for my K1#1434 and I really like it!
The backlight makes it much more comfortable in darker rooms.
I am using the 200 Ohm resistor and now I am wondering if anyone
tried a smaller resistor to make it a little more bright.
Would it make any sense? I dont
Greetings,
I have just started to build my K1-4 for which I have also bought the
LCD backlight mod. After mounting the MCU into its socket on the front
panel board (step 5 on page 21) I have to continue with the
instructions of the backlight mod. Here, the first step is to remove
the MCU from the

When the K1 backlight instructions were written (by me), it was

already-built K1s. So the builder was just instructed to unplug the
MCU... it should NOT have been soldered in, so the only added effort
you should have to expend
Hello Tom,
Thanks for your reply.
It's really no problem. I just thought for a short moment that I have
missed something. I find the instructions very clear with good
illustrations. Thanks.

Has there been any decision made whether to make a backlit LCD standard on
the K1?
Or will one have to order the K1 Kit, and the backlight mod and thereby
end up paying for an extra LCD?

The only problem I had was with the length of the LED backlight. Page 4
