Series DC motors are about as cheap as you can get in terms of raw torque and HP per dollar. That's why they're used in forklifts (and electric drills and vacuum cleaners). I'm not a motor expert, but I suspect that the total system cost is low because the controller is relatively simple.

That's what I've heard other people say. But, in B mode the Leaf does have decent regen. I've successfully driven in B mode such that I don't have to use the actual brakes until around 8MPH. So, I'd say that it certainly should turn the brake lights on for B mode regen. Maybe it isn't so critical
