Davidinstead, do a ctl-alt f2 to get to a console login.

Jeffno, just the old one on your desktop is no longer
functional as such. There's a new one that works located
rename your ~/.kderc file and log out and then back
into KDE and it should generate a new one and clear things up.

I have an internal PNP modem, and it works fine - once I'd figured out how
to change the default IRQ for ttyS02 from 3 or 4 (ie, the same as ttyS0) to
a usable value. I've never understood why the default IRQs for serial ports
3 and 4 are as they are, set to the same IRQ as ports 1 and 2.

( I cannot find my sheet at the moment, sorry ).
