Hal, VSamp (a shareware program) will convert sound fonts to something it can use. Reason -- a couple hundred bucks but really worth it -- will read soundfonts directly. If you've never seen Reason, you really ought to check it out (there is a free demo download). It is made by Propellerheads.

Executable shapes are a travesty in current versions of Finale, you can create them all day long and they don't get saved. You can edit existing executable shapes as long as you want and your edits don't get saved. They are worse than useless and MakeMusic admit that they don't work right. On
