Lombard okay to use expansion HD only without ide HD?

I have a laptop hard drive that needs to be returned. Will probably take a week or so. I don't have an extra hard drive, but I do have an expansion bay hard drive. Would it be okay to operate the laptop without an internal ata hard drive? Thanks for any information. Mike
