There is a few problems with having an unlimited party. The most significant
is that you can only have up to 99 items in your inventory. So if you have
too many characters, you cannot put enough armor on them, or give them
enough weapons to wield. And yet still have potions,scrolls, and
that's another reason I look forward to jason including larger party size in
the game, sinse then he can balance things accordingly, scoring and
hopefully enemy party size included.
Personally, I'd rather play more characters facing more enemies than just
more characters facing the same
