All of the other ideas presented are very solid, however the first thing
that I would do is get a copy of Onyx and run the tab which shows a
Hammer called Automation. Start with the default settings and if that
doesn't speed up your iMac then select all of the items in Automation.

What happens is that everything is put back just like it was and all of the
items in a corrupted database are rebuilt.
You can run this procedure over and over and at the end everything will be
just like it was when you started.
All Mail Box's will be the same and you won't have any folders

If you are trying to power the Toshiba HD from the USB port you will need
to obtain an external USB hub that can power the disk.
The MBP doesn't have enough power to run that disk.

My recommendation. Would be to first boot into Safe Mode which will load only
the OS and ?Apple applications.
After booting, startSafari and see if you can log into ShutterFly!

You should obtain the Free application mactracker which will show
how much memory your iMac can handle. When I checked on a couple of
the early iMacs' it showed that you can put in a 1Gb memory sim but
the system will only recognize 512Mb
