Some G3s, like the b/w tower, shipped with OS 8.6
Yeah, I'd like to get 8.6 on my old G3s but can't even with PostFacto4.

You should obtain the Free application mactracker which will show
how much memory your iMac can handle. When I checked on a couple of
the early iMacs' it showed that you can put in a 1Gb memory sim but
the system will only recognize 512Mb

I am trying to get my G3 to recognize two new sticks of 512. They are
out of an identical machine and I have followed all the instructions but to
no avail. Is there a secret to this thing that I have missed? I'm running
10.4 as is the machine they are coming out of. I'm feeling pretty damn
PRAM reset?

What Color/version is your iMac G3? Some of them can handle 512 while others

Thomas,
Leave your hair alone, although enjoy your drink by all means...:-)
Apparently these behemoths are not always capable of recognizing
memory modules of 256Mhz and up, even if they are the right ones.
Check their profile in LEM and related articles.
Although, IIRC, the very first

I transferred two 512 memory sticks from one working G3 to another
working G3 and nothing happened. Does it take the second machine a certain
amount of time to recognize the new memory or is there a certain procedure
for introducing new memory to a G3? Thanks to whoever can answer this for
me.

Do you have the same problem if you swap each 512 RAM into the
opposite slot?
Post the specs that get reported in the hardware profile for each RAM
when you use them separately. That may give us more clues.

Oh dear. Only one of the two DIMMs I bought seems to work. One of
them, if inserted causes the iMac to do absolutely nothing. No bong or
chime sound. The working one, bearing in mind that I'm running OS9.1
shows as 128M. Oh dear.

I think compatible 512mb sticks with the G3 are hard to get =D.

I think I might have got some. Advertised as G3 iMac compatible. Paid
£32 UK. Now just need to get rid of the non-compatible RAM on eBay.
Although happy to donate to a worthy cause.

Also I can out in the original 64mb stick with either 512 stick in

Make doubly sure the 2nd dimm is being seated correctly.

I just bought two sticks of 512M in anticipatation of updating my G3
iMac to 1gig. Now, this discussion has me nervous.People have done it
numerous times, so I know it's possible. LEM even lists the max as
1024 megs.

If not, do so, that may be all you need to do.
The PRAM contains no data related to memory configuration. So why
would resetting it make a diff?
