MERGE / MANUAL is just not going to work for this problem. The new data being
imported has hundreds people, many of whom are not connected in the incoming
data but may be in the larger database to which they are being imported (e.g.

Description, Show Date, and Show Place unchecked.

You have already confirmed that the new PC has Open Office and Adobe
installed, right? Could it be that the default programs has not been set for
the file types you are trying to open in Control Panel --> Default Programs

Next, click the "Options" button.
The first two options may be able to help a little bit. Check them out --

No, they will not transfer correctly, even back into Legacy. Yes, GEDCOM has
difficulty.
I mentioned this on-list only 8 days ago. For details, see my post in the
archive on 25 June, titled 'Incomplete Export of Source Details'. Some types
of sources will survive this process better than other

we want or need.

the actual picture. Path names are shown at Options -> Customise ->
Locations -> View current list of Multimedia Locations.

the directions in the Help file, i.e. Family View, picture icon (show

Providing you are storing using the File Icon I cannot see why it isn't working.
You might like to try updating to the current version and have a look then.

I have indeed followed your procedure very carefully yet still jpg's
open and txt's also, but not pdf's, rtf's. No pdf's open in Reports
either. I have just installed the latest version of Legacy & still no
luck.

If you haven't did it yet, try to uninstall and then install again both PDF
Reader and Open Office. Then blank the fields for alternate PDF reader and
Word processing on Options/Customize/Launch.
Then try open the files again within legacy.
