I was supposed to see a guy yesterday about a 1985 300 SD. His car is in great
shape cosmetically, but the transmission was going south. I was thinking about
buying it, letting my kid drive it until the trany fell out, and then swapping
the good engine and traney from my cosmetically trashed

no, I have not messed with it at all. The only valve cover that is off
is the passenger side, I bet when I pull the drivers side I will see a
plastic guide rail is broken.

I'm driving a 1982 300SD with a brake light issue. Actually, it's
more of an emergency brake lever issue in it. There's a lot of play
in the lever and, as a result, does not come up far enough for the
brake light to shut off. Has anyone else encountered this problem?

It is still $300 plus mounting and wiring , rustproofing etc. I think i'd
just get out the welder and build one. I'd like one too, if we want to try
for a group purchase. Bet we could get orders for 6-12 124 wagon trailer
hitches. I 'd have to dig through the files, but I think someone
I'm guessing that new E-brake cables, shoes and adjustment would cure
it. Short of that, if the cables are not too rusty, lube and adjustment
might cure it.

Might be ok if you're not too much a purist and can stand for the
diminished capacity. The factory coupling is rated at 1900KG trailed
load and disappears upon removal of the easily detachable ball head.
Think I'll hold out a while longer.

Judging by the behavior of the lever itself and the braking system as
a whole, it definitely sounds like the spring. The e-brake works just

I think the hitch itself is rated for 1900KG. That's not to say that
MB has certified that 1900KG is a safe load for the wagons. IIRC,
Arne's caravan weighed in at considerably more than 1500KG though.

Is there any trick to reattaching the rubber strip on the back bumper of my 85
300D? It looks like slots in the bumper and a key on the rubber strip but I
don't see any way to cause the key to stay in the slot because of the cover
behind the bumper. I have tried a rubber mallet to bring the

I'm not sure you understand. Its the wire BETWEEN the door and the
unibody. You can ONLY see the wires with the door open and moving the
black wire/vacuum line wrap/protector loose. That is where the wire
breaks because it cracks from the opening and closing of the door over
the years.

The Miti-Vac will work fine, I've done several with it now. Calipers
are easy, just make sure you get the pistons back in at the right angle
of rotation as you cannot turn them without the special tool once they
are in.
