you are right. First notch. However they are sturdy enough that if
the pawl is disengaged, and the load slams down with nothing engaged,

Anyway I think my '84 190D has bad front shocks, theres a vibration at speed
and when I hit bumps it feels like the front is slightly bouncy. The rears are
new last fall.
I seem to remember Marshall saying you couldn't diagnose MB shocks by the
bounce test as they'd be
Your struts might be bouncy, but vibration is usually from an unbalanced or out
of round tire, or loose joints in the steering linkage, like tie rod ends.

Any other cause should be cheaply repairable.
If you'd ever have opened up that Amana you'd know why
it lasted so long. Seriously high build quality.

I don't think a lift is necessarily safer than jackstands. Cars have
been known to fall off lifts too. Good jackstands, placed properly,
should be quite safe. Certainly a real lift would make a lot of jobs
easier and faster though and less time under the car would I guess
be less risk.

A lift is still only as safe as the operator of it is, so I get a bit
paranoid about the safety...
