Many thanks, folks. I seem to remember that a special tool is needed or one
can be assembled out of washers and a (bolt?) I tried to replace those same
bushings on the '83 240D stick-shift without success, but still have the
bushings which might be the same since both cars are '83 123s.

There are two sets of plastic bushings. One set at each end of the round
rod that connects the shifter to the transmission and another set on the
shifter shaft where it pivots fore and aft. With new/good bushings it will
be tight and smooth as butter. On the other hand it could be an internal

largest gap is found, and then you adjust the gap to spec, and then double

My 1976 300D that I owned in 1983 - 1984 had an auxiliary fuel tank in the
trunk, holding 12 or 15 gallons IIRC. Only needed to fillerup once per
month. Nice car, although it had high maintenance costs because the PO had
turned back the odometer.

nut). This should work if the belt tension is correct. While you are

Made it easy to keep track of what I had done and kept me from missing one. I
also did all the intakes at one time and then all the exhausts. That way you're
working with the same set of gauges.
