The next big event was one day on my way to work the rear end locked
up at about 60 mph. A seal had gone and leaked the lube out. Not
long after that was fixed the foot brake went to the floor and I
sailed through a stoplight. (This was before the day of two
chambered brake reservoirs.) A
300D 2.5 should be a turbo. 190 2.5 can be either, the turbo model is
quite rare and a real pocket rocket.

I have not done any rears so can't comment on that job, but I have
rebuilt front suspensions on both a 123 and 126. Neither job is
particularly difficult, having the spring compressor is the key. I
would just do it right, take it apart, replace all the wear items, and
not fool with bodges --

The gills are for the air intake to the air filter. I don't remember what
was blocking the front access, but there are several emissions divices
involved in that filter assembly as well.
