Since changing the fuel distributor is really not difficult I decided to put
the
old one back on and see what happens. It started up pretty quick and ran rough
with excessive white smoke. I assume
Coolant level? Oil milky looking? Blown head gasket?

However the KE-jet system was used in other cars, so a good Bosch
service centre may be the go.
Overall the system is not that complicated but diagnoses is easier with
the right tools and knowledge.

I remember these, they can be cleaned with a bit of carby cleaner and
the missus toothbrush.
From memory they do help to regulate the flow or some such thing but
more importantly act as a last line of defence to stop nasties getting
into the FD.
Also lets consider that the FD rebuilder makes

airflow meter counterclockwise leans it out. Don't leave the allen wrench in
the screw and

I'm still battling mine, I suspect I need to bite the bullet and take
the fuel distributor off and clean everything up. Just put a new
regulator on the alternator today, battery went flat between Monday
(when it started at -4) and Friday night. Good thing it didn't poop

I still have an issue with rough idle and hesitation during acceleration on
my 1990 300E w/90K that I haven't been able to fix. So far I replaced the
fuel filter, fuel pumps, oxygen sensor, coolant temperature sensor,and EHA
valve...problem still there!
My latest part
OK I am not sure what differences there are between the US and Euro
model 300E, we got the Euro version here, however I don't think there
any 'major' differences.
The US and Japan 103.983 engines got a MAS relay for some reason,
apparently pin 1 is battery, pin 2 is feed to fuel pumps
