No not really. I had thought of that, using some sort of small

Yeah, I don’t think the 12 star nuts that were on later cars have a retention

I did that. Just a touch of the blue stuff. The rattle gun can usually

Just snug it up to where it was and declare victory. Avoid impact
wrenching it at all costs.
All it has to do is not let the flange loosen up; the splines take all the
torque.

The only long term car I did this on was my 1982 300SD. I think I replace the

it. No observed issues with the diff during that time.

Depends on the diff, but the ones I’ve done I just mark everything and put it
back where it was if there is a crush washer.
The finnie was a good example of that. The diffs in those use a crush washer
that sets the clearance for the ring and pinion, but if you remove the nut

So how do you get the torque right and not mess up the differential? I

Yeah you can pull the flange easily enough. Just go easy with the impact
putting it back together or you will crush the crush sleeve more and have
to have the pinion reset.

Changed out the diff fluid on the $600E300. Was nasty. Was not hard to get the
plugs out. Looks like the pinion seal is leaking. Looks like a PITA to get the
diff dropped and out so I think I’ll just live with it. Diff seemed to be
fairly full so I guess not too much has leaked.
