We get out of school Friday and Monday I am teaching summer school at
another site. I will have 4th and 5th graders who are very low income
and labeled AT RISK of Retention. I only have them for 16 days and can
do (pretty much) what I want. I do have to give the District Pre-Post

A great reading comprehension strategies website for teachers, parents and
children is a site called "Into the Book". It has downloads, songs to teach

are being pulled for 40 minutes every day for Read Right tutoring.
I haven't had time to study it myself, but I do know it takes intense
teacher training to be able to use Read Right as an intervention. (We're

I agree. The F&P benchmarking system is very accurate. We did learn,
however, that it is best to wait on initial assessment until the first few
weeks of school are past. Many of our kiddos had not read over the summer
and just weren't "warmed up" enough to have a comprehension conversation.
I only use chapter books with groups of kids who have shown me that they are
responsible and self-motivated readers. I treat it like a book club, where
they do the reading on their own, and when we meet as a group, I coach them
through a discussion. I give them a reflection response prompt or
I have been feeling the same way about the Word Work choices in my room.
They all want to do the same thing...write their words on small white
boards. We already study words through Sitton Spelling activities every
day, so I'm thinking of removing that choice, too.
