The Sherburne National Wildlife Refuge is hosting a "Wildlife Festival" from
10-2 on Saturday October 1st.
It will have kid-friendly exhibits, a nature store/gift shop and food trucks.
This is near Zimmerman and Princeton.

are a few soft sections (especially around the wetland at Milepost 3) so do

Refuge staff estimates there are 5,478 cranes staging on the refuge right now.
They are refueling for the final migration flight in a few weeks.

The annual "Wildlife Festival" at Sherburne NWR has been deferred again this
year. But there are two silver linings:
* Many of the gates that are normally closed will be open from 8 am to
3pm. This is miles and miles of back country gravel roads seldom seen by the

drivability yet. It will close Nov 7-15 for deer firearm season. It will reopen

I found both the Prothonotary Warbler and the Hooded Warbler today at the
previously reported locations. The Prothonotary was at the Elk River access on
the east side of CR 5 north of Big Lake. The Hooded was in the Sherburne

I spent the day at Sherburne National Wildlife Refuge. I found 66 species. The
highlight of the day was at 810am this morning when I found a Hooded Warbler on
the Mahnomen trail. It was near the lake that sits between the trail and the
highway. I heard it singing and got a couple of great looks

Bluebird. Just as we were about to give up after two hours, about 8

osprey sighting and the great blue heron at Sherburne NWR. I saw a

Walked Sherburne NWR's trails the last couple of days, virtually no sign of
spring, avian or otherwise.
However, did discover the previously seen & photographed fisher's roosting spot
(at least one of them). Weasel on steroids!

Jay Hamernick came for a visit this morning, and when headed back to Shoreview
drove the Ann Lake campground road, where he found about 30 red crossbills and
a Townsend's Solitaire. The crossbills were 1/4 mile east of Sherburne CR 5
along the campground road. The solitaire was closer to 1 mil
This morning's sandhill crane count was 4600, down from last week's 6700 or
so. However, there were a lot of birds calling from marshes that crane
counters couldn't see, and therefore weren't able to count. (We only count
birds that we can see - in the air flying overhead from refuge marshes t
Prairie's Edge Wildlife Drive
The Drive is closed to vehicles during the deer-gun hunt. The gate on CR 5
will be closed and locked on Thursday afternoon November 1 at dusk and will
remain closed through Sunday, November 11. It will open again on Monday
morning, November 12. The drive will the

count so far this year. High count in (warm) November last year was 7527.
A single black-bellied plover was still on Stickney Pool mud flats, last leg of
the Prairie's Edge Wildlife Drive on Thursday at noon.

The Sherburne Savanna Sitters will be conducting "The Big Sit!" bird count at
Sherburne Refuge headquarters on Sunday, October 14 from 6:00 a.m. to about
3:00 p.m. Stop by to chat - see how our count is going. Lots of eyes and ears
needed and appreciated!

Sherburne's sandhill crane count on Thursday, October 11 was 5,300 birds.
To view birds in the morning, they've been leaving the refuge mainly
between 6:45 or 7:00 a.m. and 8:00 or 8:15. On dark mornings they may leave a
little later. The best place is the 25th St. parking area on the NW corn
Between sunrise and 10:30 a.m. today, I've observed 34 species from my office
window, either in the yard, or flying by.
Highlights have been Red-breasted Nuthatch, Ruby-crowned Kinglet, Common
Yellowthroat, Orange-crowned, Yellow and Yellow-rumped Warblers, White-throated
and White-crowned Spa

The last couple of afternoons on my way home, I've traveled CRs 70, 11, and 7th
St. that travel north and west out of Sherburne Refuge and along the Sherburne
and Mille Lacs county lines. There have been significant numbers of eastern
bluebirds and sparrows migrating, and this route has been wo
I've had 3 juncos feeding outside the HQ today all day. Flushed a couple from
a roadside last Friday - first sighting - but this is the first day they've
been at feeders. Still a few warblers moving through, and today had a
ruby-crowned kinglet and brown creeper as well.

We spent late afternoon yesterday at Sherburne NWR. The overwhelming aura
was DRY!! Birding was slow on the Wildlife Drive, highlight was a gorgeous
juvenile Northern Harrier, coursing over what's left of Little Bluestem
pool. Also saw three Great Egrets in Big Bluestem, two Trumpeter Swans at
Significant passerine movement in Sherburne Refuge today - but not overly
diversified - nine species of warblers, Blue-headed Vireos, one Philadelphia.
Also Peregrine Falcon, RH Woodpecker and Lincoln's Sparrow.
