went into /etc/mysql and edited both my.cnf and debian.cnf so that the socket = /tmp/mysql.sock Then I reinstalled MySQL server: $ sudo apt-get install mysql-server mysql-server-5.0 Seems to be running now. Thanks everyone for helping me get things sorted out. -- Dave M G -- MySQL General

Should I upgrade to 4.1 or 5.0 (Newbie level question)

manager doesn't update it to 5.0. So if 5.0 is the current version of MySQL, why does it seem to me that it's not widely adopted? Would it be problematic now or later if I upgraded to 5.0? Would I have to soon upgrade to 5.0 if I upgraded to 4.15 now? Thank you for any advice. -- Dave M G
