Actually with a USB NIC this would make a pretty sweet diskless frontend. Not as pretty as the Roku, but it DOES support MPEG4 which to me is big. Not sure what it takes to get myth frontend to compile against uClib or what you could run for a framebuffer (DirectFB or X).

I know its already been said here but MFD/MFE will do everything you're looking for. Even can incorporate itunes if you want. If you modify the xml for the menus you will even be able to use it from within the frontend (I've replaced mythmusic with this already).

Biggest problem i see with it is connecting to your backend.
Around the house you could probably get the bandwidth but there's TV's
there... unless I suppose you were able to transcode the video to
a lower bitrate/resolution

What mythtranscode converts it to depends on your settings, for my they
bocome mpeg4. What I really use it for is to edit the file down
using the cutlist **cough** no commercials **cough**. I'd say the

Could be possible that you're using hardware accelerstion to decode
your video in which case a lot of video cards (like my radeon 9600)
don't support the output to both even though they will display your
normal video on both.

The CELL is a RISC CPU, why would you want to emulate x86? What I was
saying tho was that its based off the power 5 instruction set if I'm
not mistaken and shouldn't take much to port to (it'll prolly get done

Trust me there are much cooler things coming down the pipline like
RTSP and DAAP support for one. Imagine a frontend in every room
sync'd to the same point in the same song/video stream all changing
fluidly from the same interface. Add to that playing your iTunes
libraries and you've got it going on. Oh yeah, and the music will
keep playing when you leave the menu I'm pretty sure.

Easiest way to troubleshoot this might be to start logging the backend
output with something like "/usr/local/bin/mythbackend -d -v -l
/var/mythbackend.log". That will log all backend access and then
MythWeb, or PHP I should say, will log its errors to the apache
error_log (mine is /var/log/apach

firewire drivers allowed configure to detect the required libraries
and then enable firewire in myth. I think the ones needed were
libavc1394-0.5.0, libraw1394-1.2.0, libiec61883, and of course the

I had to recompile QT with --no-xft to get the menus to come up right,
this ISN'T your problem if the mythtv-setup menu comes up ok.

Looks exactly like the MCE remote (I like the MCE remote) couldn't
