I can connect to my isp using numerous dialers,
but I can't connect to the net, using either netscape or lynx. I have checked my proxy
settings for netscape.
Does anybody know what the problem could be?

You are having two "append" lines, as far as I know lilo just interpretes
one. It should look like following:

That odd IRQ could indeed explain alot of your problems in attempting to
communicate with your modem. Linux defaults the serial port IRQs to the
"typical" IRQ for that port (ie, IRQs 3 and 4). You need to explicitly
tell Linux that your serial port is at another IRQ by using:

You've probably overwritten the drive parameter block on your hard drive.
You'll need a disk utility which will fix it... such as OnTrack Disk
Manager.
The BIOS reads the DPB at boot to grab configuration information from the
new "Biosless" drives...

You can download
in order to get the smc 9432 to work in linux, use the rtl8139 driver. i have a
9000 series card from smc and this is the driver you have to use. For the 8000
series it is the wd driver.

yet when I try to install I get messages that my root partition is too small

all the info. my example was my datebook.pdb file created after a
hotsync from my pilot, in win98 i could see that all two years stuff was
in there but in kde the same file only displayed a tiny proportion of
the same info

perhaps you are confusing advice (often seen in this list) to have a
/boot partition which need only be very small -20mb i think but an
expert will have a better idea of ideal size,
a seperate /usr partion will keep / down, but unless on a seperate drive
total space used remains the same,
