Skip the padded cell but check you BIOS setting first. Is the serial ports set up to AUTO ASSIGN IRQ's and port address? If yes, change it to a set irq/port address. Linux doesn't do well with the auto-assign on ports in bios. (talking from experience). Please let me know if that helps.
