If you're willing to go for that 2nd language already,
I recommend Python, which comes on your MDK CDs. If you've
got the full install for that, you'll find IDLE under
Applications | Development. IDLE is a GUI shell allowing
you to interact with Python in a command line
When I installed MDK8.0 it gave me a generic
super VGA monitor. Thought I'd be clever and
tell it I had a Viewsonic 17G (cuz that's what
I've got). Something in the synch settings
didn't work. Good-bye X, hello trying to find
the silly .conf file (or reinstall if you're a

I had this same problem of a corrupted install CD, unable
to create RAM disk in second stage. I'd downloaded from
nearby Oregon FTP server. I later grabbed the .iso images
from Sourceforge stealth I think it was, and had no problem
with the resulting burns.

Maybe someone from Mandrake
it, then just try and see if it works, using the usb-serial module, and
telling the ups monitoring software that it is on ttyUSBx.
Thanks Alex. Could you just say a few more words about
the usb-serial module. You mean what I download from

I'm sending this to the samba list too, but maybe has something
to do with MDK specifically. When I make the latest Samba
(downloaded and untarred from website) I get:

Compiling printing/print_svid.c
Compiling printing/print_cups.c
printing/print_cups.c:25:23:
Problem solved -- just needed more devel type files from CD, the
cups library stuff (used software manager, searched on cups,
installed from rpms).
make is now complete. Onward!...

When I do a graphical boot into KDE, I have a new pause with the
NFS statd:
process showing, followed by a brief notification of a fatal error.
Something about UPS monitoring, followed by PANIC. Then the
boot process finishes.
Yes, I do have UPS (uninterruptable power supply)
The error message I get on bootup is
Fatal error UPS monitoring apcserial.c fails on
line 165 -- cannot communicate with UPS via serial
port
-- that's because my Belkin UPS connects to the
computer via USB cable.

Looks like my Belkin F6C650 UPS isn't compatible
with Linux, according to their chart:
Just wanted to add that I've managed to get sound with
the CDR drive (hdd). The CDRW (hdc) doesn't want to output
to the sound card.
Some info, in case helpful to any pro troubleshooters:
hda: WDC AC28400R, ATA DISK drive
hdb: QUANTUM FIREBALLlct10 20, ATA DISK drive
hdc: SONY CD-RW CRX160E,
Thanks Jim.
Note that both CD players (CDR and CDRW) play through the
speakers when I'm in the WinME environment on the same
machine (tested a few times). I wouldn't think MDK'd
require a cable where WinME does not.

KDE and probably Gnome also have X-client interfaces to the
boot parameters. Go to Mankdrake Control Center and look under
bootup settings. You'll find some funky dialog boxes letting
you pick the default boot OS.

OK, that was it! Duh, slap forehead: no cable from CDR

staring cross-eyed at my modem -- it's a PCI card) which
fortunately has inputs for CD and AUX. So now both the
CDR and CDRW play thru speakers.

If it's any consolation, I know Java developers who
use Linux full time and consider it a fine development
platform. I think IBM does a slick Java JVM -- but
none of this is personal experience (I've written some
Java in Windoze and that's it).

Another question: the setup wizard very helpfully found my HP color
injet printer, which is actually on a USB port. The test page was perfect.
However, I have an HP laser (4L) on the local LPT1 parallel port, and
I can't find a way to get the printer config utility to find/sense this
option.
Of course on a single machine you can mount your windows
partitions and interact with its files from Linux.
But you're interested in sharing over a network.
Linux can emulate an NT box using Samba, a utility
in widespread use for this purpose.
Here's a fat book on the subject, available on the
trying to figure that out.
