Then you seem to have never tried to abort a layered make system with ^C.
Smake includes a lot of code just wo work around this kind of bash bugs
on Linux.

minutes of frenetic CPU usage (e.g. when booting Knoppix
3.9), it just stops using CPU and probably sleeps. I have even tried
booting windows 89se boot floppy (as per above blog), but the same thing
happens.
