I have found that plastic gutter guard, used to keep leaves out of
rain gutters, is an easy solution for keeping media in slatted
baskets. I use it on the bottom only. It is cheap and available in
rolls at most hardware stores in this area (the northeast) at least.

I have used wine corks in wooden baskets for years. The corks are free, do
not decompose very fast and give extra surface to wet during watering that
keeps the humidity higher for a longer time. I also have some Vandas in wood
baskets with no mix. Many people have been successful with
Hi,
I'm a bit puzzled about this...does this measure include all orchid hybrids or just
the tropical or the horticultural hybrids? Many native orchid sites I've seen have a
number of natural hybrids, so if I'm not mistaking the poachers get a free ticket for
these plants ? Also what about
I don't think moss is that great of an idea, it seems to hold too much
moisture, at least for me up in the soggy 'wet' coast of Canada. I use big
pieces of lava rock for mine and they seem to grow fine. I use a single
layer, mostly to hold the plant down, and soak the pant once a day for about

I wonder if the average inspector will be able to identify species orchids
intentionally mis-labled as hybrids.

We'll second the comments about growing vandas with no medium in the
baskets. We grow all of our vandaceous orchids this way (we do mount a few of the
smaller species), in baskets with no other medium. With proper watering, good
air circulation and high humidity in the growing area, no
Carson,
I agree I dont see much of a savings for orchid business though one
possible benefit to orchid businesses is the of greater number of
hybrids being available to them without questioning or having to
establish whether the parents are CITES compliant. Of course this is all

Nancy,
I dont have any problem with all hybrids being excluded from CITES.
Even though I tried to spell out my criticism I guess I was not clear
enough for some people, though I know icones knows what I was getting
at. I will try and be clearer for you.

The solutions to trade in orchids are really quite simple:
#1 Ban all trade in wild collected specimens.
#2 Allow all trade in true Art Prop plants regardless of whether they are
species or hybrids. No Cites permits should be needed for these.
There are ways to implement these 2 statements. I
Frederick,
Here is my take on your questions.
Natural hybrids are not species albeit they are found in the wild. Most
(please read most but not all) have very limited populations restricted to
a single plant or to a handful of plants that occasionally occur. Most do
not reproduce in the wild
Mark,
As many of us have said on this forum CITES has nothing to do with
conservation it is a TRADE treaty pure and simple. We must not confuse that
issue. BTW when I asked the CITES Secretariat's Plants Officer attending the
14WOC the question What are the orchid species that CITES has saved?

I have a Paph. Olivia (niveum x tonsum) which is from the Romanoff
collection. It bloomed for me in 2000, but since then it produces only blasted buds
almost every year. I just repotted it in a bark mix. It is a very healthy plant
with good roots. Most of my other Paphs are healthy bloom

Frederick,
The first three words of CITES spells it out, and the first two don't count -
Convention (on) International Trade.
Regarding native sites selling natural hybrids - that does not mean that the
products they are selling came from the wild. A natural hybrid is one that
occurs in the
