In fact, I did just that on my very recently erstwhile Dahon Hon Solo, with
Surly Open bar: 2 layers of faux cork tape from thriftily saved oddments.
It worked well.

I had to cut off the stop only because I perversely insisted on using an 8
or 9 speed-era road front der with a much later and 2-piece mountain bike
triple.
Without the stop, the derailleur will kick the chain over the bash guard
and off the crank entirely; the reason is that the derailleur has to
condition with wide platforms. Not GR-9, not Sylvan touring, not Urban --
don't like 'em. Willing to discuss cash adjustments for different trade

Forgot: I do like climbing in a higher gear, and you often do that with a
ss bike, but then you can do this with a multispeed bike too, so it is only
the removal of the temptation to downshift that is a side benefit of

I've asked myself that, since I've also felt similar if not equal qualities
with other bikes. For the ease of rolling/maintaining a gear, I can't say
that it is "planing" only because at least 1 of these bikes was rather
stout-tubed; another uses thinwall but OS tubing, and I had 1 lightweight

Frankly I've never noticed or given much thought to the flex of the fork on
the 1999. The bike is relatively comfortable even with 23s at 80/90 psi.
The 2003 Curt, sold, was almost identical in design, but never felt as
"fast" -- which is why I eventually replaced it with the new Matthews.
