If you go into /usr/src/redhat/SPECS , you will see a file named
packagename.spec
In the .spec file, there is a line that details which package it depends
on, at the very least BuildRequires.
If you change those, it should no longer error.
Once you've done that, do an rpm -ba
Have you considered buying an USB floppy drive?
This is the first time in a year that I need a floppy drive. This $20
seems to be a waste of money.

because a period (or colon) can be used to separate arguments to
commands like chown. for example,
chown user1.group1 somefile
makes user1 the owner and group1 the group of somefile. if periods
were allowed in usernames, all hell could break loose. the same goes
for #'s, and :'s. i know
