Re: [talk-ph] Automated assessment of OSM coastline data quality
Interesting. Thanks for sharing Eugene. I think the common issue for the Philippines is the third case in the first image (coastline with detailed but inaccurate approximation). When we started the coastline correction 3 years ago, there was very little hi-res imagery. For my part, I did most of the corrections using the Landsat imagery. Vewing with bing's hires imagery, there is an obvious offset from the Landsat derived correction. As mentioned in the article, this is not considered in the output visualization. If we can get Cristoph's code for making this visualization, maybe we can setup another webmap (like the Sawtooth Coastlines webmap) to coordinate improvements? Helping Indonesia improve its coastline is a good inter-community project as well. :) On Sun, Apr 14, 2013 at 3:26 AM, Eugene Alvin Villar sea...@gmail.com wrote: Hi guys, Here's a nice analysis done by Christoph Hormann in automated assessment of the quality of OSM's coastline data: http://www.imagico.de/map/coastline_quality_en.php If you don't want to read the whole article, here's the TL;DR version: Coastlines where there are a few nodes per kilometer AND where the angle at each node is large means that the coastline is most likely to be of low quality. The last map image in the article highlights areas in the world where these low quality coastlines are located such as large parts of Indonesia. The Philippines is on the average to probably good side of the scale. I think this is thanks in a large part to the coastlines correction collaboration the OSMPH community did 3 years ago: http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Philippines/Coastline_corrections But if you look at Japan, you can see that it is on the probably very good side of the quality scale. So the Philippines still needs a lot of improvement. If you want to help out improving the OSMPH coastlines, you can do the following: 1. Go to the OSMPH imagery coverage map (either http://maning.github.io/Imagery_Coverage_Map/ or http://tools.openstreetmap.org.ph/imagery_coverage/ ) 2. Look for remote/provincial coastline areas with high-res Bing satellite imagery 3. Zoom into a coastline, then switch between the Bing and OSM/MapQuest background layers to check the coastline accuracy 4. Click on the Edit in Potlatch or Edit in JOSM link to edit away! (You need to enable JOSM's Remote Control feature [it is enabled by default in newer JOSM versions] for the Edit in JOSM link to work.) If you're using JOSM, the Improve Way Accuracy tool (http://josm.openstreetmap.de/wiki/Help/Action/ImproveWayAccuracy) is *extremely* helpful. If will eliminate the need to click-drag your mouse. Maybe in the future, we can recreate the quality algorithm developed by Christoph Hormann and create a webmap specific for the Philippines. :-) Keep on mapping! Re: [OSM-talk-be] Abandoned Railways / cycleways
No, highway and cycleway should not share any ways. The only thing which may be acceptable is reusing the same nodes for two different ways, but only if they are on exactly the same location, which is actually quite rare. In quite a lot of cases there will be an offset, or it will diverge a little bit from the original railway track. Re: [OSM-talk-be] Abandoned Railways / cycleways
For the first two examples there is no doubt that there are still remains of a railway, but I still wonder whether it makes much sense to leave the railway tag on this http://www.openstreetmap.org/?lat=51.1060394346714lon=4.379757642745972zoom=17 especially on the parking area and to a lesser extend in the first part parallel to Voetweg 32. If the line was not on the map, I would never have known that there has been a railway. I don't know of any visual clues there. Of course the Spoorweglaan gives away that there used to be a railway :-) On Sun, Apr 14, 2013 at 11:11 PM, Ben Laenen benlae...@gmail.com wrote: No, highway and cycleway should not share any ways. [OSM-talk] SOTM Baltics 2013 in Tartu Estonia
Hi! We've been discussing the idea of a regional mini-conference to be attended by mappers from Estonia, Russia, Latvia and Finland. OSM community in our countries seems to be a closed and isolated circle with a very few new members each year. So we suggest to break the isolation through an international OSM meet-up (or mini-conference) in Tartu, Estonia. We coined the event SOTM Baltics. Mappers from the other contries are also welcomed! Event format: very unformal (it's more like UNconference than an academic conference): normal talks, lighting talks, podium discussions, social event in a pub in the evening. Why Tartu? We have mappers from Tartu who volonteered to find a room for the SOTM Baltics. Also, Tartu can be conveniently accessed from the largest cities in the Baltic countries: Tallinn, Helsinki, Sankt Petersburg, Moscow, Riga. Tartu is a university city and IT-center of Estonia. Event fee: no or 10 Euro, to be decided. SOTM Baltics dates: a weekend in July. The exact dates are to be decided via polling (see below) How to get to Tartu with public transportation. First reach Tallinn, the capital of Estonia, then take a bus or a train to Tartu (2.5 hours). An alternative route is via Riga. There are 4 daily buses between Riga and Tartu that depart Riga at 8:40, 18:45, 22:45, 23:55. The journey takes around 4 hours. Tickets can be bought at http://www.luxexpress.eu/en If you'd like to attend the event, please take part in the poll to decide on the conference dates: http://doodle.com/anddmr2kpxwnmv77 The discussion takes place in the talk-ee list: http://lists.openstreetmap.org/pipermail/talk-ee/2013-April/001434.html If you'd like to take part in the discussion, subscribe here: http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-ee ___ talk mailing list talk@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk

Not quite sure what Werner wanted to convey with the info about the shape and numbers of the long tail of OSM (perhaps nothing more than the numbers). Anyways, I'd just want to say that the tiny 0.1% of the data might well be a huge number of otherwise missing POIs, place or road names or other map features' details, tiny corrections to roads, etc. It's also likely a thing that has made 100+k people love OSM just a bit more.
Was könnte man dagegen wohl machen? Könnte man da wohl was direkt bei JOSM machen?

Was könnte man dagegen wohl machen? Könnte man da wohl was direkt bei JOSM machen?
Beispielsweise grammatikalische Anpassungen.
-- Daniele Forsi ___ Talk-it mailing list Talk-it@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-it
