[talk-ph] GPS accuracy advances
Ongoing research in Spain Spanish scientists develop more accurate sat-nav system Researchers in Spain have developed a system they say can greatly improve the accuracy of car sat-navs. It combines a conventional global positioning system (GPS) signal with those of other sensors - accelerometers and gyroscopes - to pinpoint a car's location to within 2m (6ft 6in). It can be cheaply installed in any car and may eventually work on smartphones, the researchers say. Such a system has the potential to help the burgeoning driverless car industry. The system was jointly designed and developed by the Applied Artificial Intelligence Group and the Systems Intelligence Laboratory - both based at Carlos III University in Madrid (UC3M). We have managed to improve the determination of a vehicle's position in critical cases by between 50 and 90%, said researcher David Martin. According to the scientists, the margin of error of commercial GPS used in cars is about 15m in an open field, where the receiver has good visibility from the satellites. However, in cities where the signal bounces off buildings and trees, the calculation of a vehicle's position can be off by more than 50m. In certain cases, such as in tunnels, communication is lost completely. At that point, the system reverts to essentially guessing the location. While this may be sufficient for in-car navigation systems, it would not be suitable for automated vehicles, which are currently being developed by the likes of Google. Cars are becoming increasingly connected, said Prof David Bailey from the Coventry University Business school. There is a lot of research into driverless cars and, for that, GPS needs to be as accurate as possible, he added. The system developed in Madrid makes use of a unit comprised of three accelerometers and three gyroscopes, which keep track of the speed and direction of a vehicle at all times. The data from these is combined with that from a conventional GPS unit to pinpoint a location of a car to within 2m in cities. Using smartphones The next step for the Spanish researchers is to develop a system that can work with smartphones. Most are equipped with a range of sensors, including an accelerometer, a gyroscope, a magnetometer, GPS and cameras, in addition to wi-fi, Bluetooth and GSM communications. We are now starting to work on the integration of this data fusion system into a mobile telephone, said researcher Enrique Marti. It can integrate all of the measurements that come from its sensors in order to obtain the same result that we have now, but at an even much lower cost, since it is something that almost everyone can carry around in their pocket. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-21442095 -- ___ talk-ph mailing list talk-ph@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-ph

Groeten, Sander ___ Talk-be mailing list Talk-be@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-be

Where would you place this node if it is a more complex crossing? Like a crossing of 2 roads with dual carriage ways? That is a very good question. If we have a normal crossroads junction (or T) then there is a single node at the point where the two ways cross (or meet). If we have a crossroads with dual carriageways then there are four nodes where the roads cross. In Korea we also have named junctions at overpasses, so the junction name is where the two roads cross (or meet) but they physically don't join because one road is on a bridge over the other, and there are sliproads to move between them. The first case is very easy. The single node is tagged junction=yes, and name=* The second case we could tag all four nodes. Or put a single node in the middle, but then it's not obviously related to the junction. Or put all four nodes in a relation. Or draw a closed way (area) covering the junction. In the third case we could tag the four nodes at the beginning of each slip road. Or put the nodes in a relation. Or draw a big area covering the entire junction. Obviously the same applies T-junctions but there are only three nodes. I could post this question on the talk-ko list and ask what Korean users would expect to see. Unfortunately, I don't think anyone is using the data, so it's hard to know exactly what to do until someone uses it and says 'yes, this is great', or 'no, this won't do'. Most of the junctions in Korea /are/ named as free-standing name nodes that were brought in in a big import a while ago. When I am mapping I usually cross-reference the name node with a photo of the sign from the junction and then merge the name node into the physical junction node. Having written this, I think that a combination of single nodes where two ways cross, and relations where dual-carriageways cross or there is a bridge and slip roads would work well. Junction names on exits or junctions of motorways is common practise: http://www.openstreetmap.org/?lat=51.3934lon=6.12683zoom=15layers=M (Knooppunt Zaarderheiken is the name tag, e.g. http://www.openstreetmap.org/browse/node/42529258) I could post this question on the talk-ko list and ask what Korean users would expect to see. And talk-jp for Japan. I see little use in discussing how we would like to do it. openstreetmap.jp has a map, but it looks to be the standard slippy map. Has noone there seen this as a big enough problem to make their own rendering and start mapping the junctions? Ah, yes, I already do put the name of the junction on the motorway exit, but I have not noticed if this would apply to other named junctions (they are signed differently but conceptually they might be the same). It would be simple enough to adopt this for lower classes of road. One of the problems we have in Japan and Korea is that they already have awesome free maps online. Much better than Google, with lots of features and resources, and everyone can use them to full effect on their smartphones. That in conjunction with satnavs in every car means that OSM has no purpose other than a pleasant hobby here, which I am very happy to continue. [OSM-talk] Turbo-Button in Taginfo
In addition to the already existing XAPI and JOSM buttons taginfo [1] now also has a Turbo Button accessing the Turbo interface [2] to the Overpass API [3]. You can find the button with the Turbo symbol (looks like a steering wheel) on the right below the filter settings (which are also taken into account) on all key, tag, and relations pages in taginfo. Throught this button it is easy, for instance, to see all usages for a given tag in a certain area, and maybe load them into JOSM in another step. See for example here: http://taginfo.openstreetmap.org/keys/amenity or here: http://taginfo.openstreetmap.org/tags/amenity=restaurant Many thanks to Martin Raifer for his excellent Overpass UI and special thanks for adding the necessary functions so that I can access it easily from taginfo. And, of course, thanks to Roland Olbricht for the Overpass API. The different tools created by different people for OSM might look like a complicated patchwork. But I think the tools can, over time, be integrated more and more if we build the right interfaces. The combination of taginfo, Turbo and Overpass API surely isn't perfect yet, but it is another step to a more integrated tool system. This is too complicated. The problem is to specify that a junction has a name, and to disambiguate these from any other junction. Right now we have a mechanism for this when the junction is a roundabout: junction=roundabout name=* In the wiki is was stated that named junctions can be marked with: junction=yes name=* However, Mapnik does not render a label for this. I'm not sure if any other renderer does. Mapnik *does* render a label for a named roundabout. To add a junction name we could just add a name=* tag to the junction node, but then there is no hint about what the name means. So, by adding junction=yes it indicates that this *is* a junction, and the name is the name of the junction. It's simple and obvious. junction=crossroads would be fine, but it doesn't add any information. junction=yield is no good because it does not specify which direction of approach should yield. junction=stop is also no good, for the same reason. So, what I want is for Mapnik to render a label at a node if the there is a junction=yes tag (and name=* tag) present. This has been stated in the wiki for a long time.

I wrote scripts to joined them myself to lessen the impact of doing a large join on Lambertus's server. I've also cut them in large longitude swaths that should fit conveniently on removable media. http://daveh.dev.openstreetmap.org/garmin/Lambertus/2013-02-12 Can or should I seed the torrents? Yes!! If you use the .torrent files, please seed. That web server is in the UK, and it helps to have some peers on this side of the Atlantic. Why is my map missing small rectangular areas? There have been some missing tiles from Lambertus's map (the red rectangles), I don't see any at the moment, so you may want to update if you had issues with the last set. Why can I not copy the large files to my new SD card? If you buy a new card (especially SDHC), some are FAT16 from the factory. I had to reformat it to let me create a 2GB file. Does your map cover Mexico/Canada? Yes!! I have, for the purposes of this map, annexed Ontario in to the USA. Some areas of North America that are close to the US also just happen to get pulled in to these maps. [Talk-us] parcel boundaries and associated data in OSM
Hey guys, In my research group (the Urban Analytics Lab at Berkeley's Department of City and Regional Planning), we use parcel data for land-use projection, accessibility, and visualization. For example, over the past couple of years we worked with regional government agencies here in the Bay Area to put together a parcel-level urbansim (http://www.urbansim.org) land-use model for regional planning purposes. We've also developed a prototype 3D visualization tool (http://www.urbansim.org/Documentation/UrbanVision) to visualize parcel data, and published on using OSM data for accessibility calculations [0]. If you poke around the Internet for references to our director Prof. Paul Waddell you'll get the idea. We really want a nationwide consolidated, standard parcel database to build upon. Such products are available from numerous proprietary data vendors who make it their business to routinely gather and consolidate data from local government agencies around the country. Of course these are often expensive and have restrictions on redistribution. Our federal government has been trying for sometime to create a nationwide public domain parcel database [1][2][3], but this has not happened. Many states have managed to consolidate parcel data (e.g., Massachusetts, Montana, New Jersey). This is very helpful, but notable work is required to adapt tools or research from one state to another. And our state along with many others has no such offering. As a result, parcel data users for whom proprietary sources are too restrictive or expensive go about manually gathering the data from county agencies. If the application doesn't span county lines, and if the county is open with their data, this may not be a problem. But these two conditions are often not both met, driving a more intensive data gathering effort. Such efforts are often duplicated for different projects. We believe that this landscape of use and parcel data availability represents an opportunity to form a parcel data community concerned with building and maintaining an open nationwide (global?) consolidated parcel database. This idea is [obviously] inspired by OSM. And my immediate thought was, Fun! Let's add parcel data to OSM! How do we do that? This inquiry has of course led to numerous more detailed questions, the most fundamental one, of course, being: Is parcel data welcome in OSM? I've spent some time reading through the mailing list history. In addition to gaining an appreciation for some of the issues regarding the management of parcel data, I promptly learned that this is a controversial question. For each claim that a consensus exists against parcel data in OSM, a parcel data advocate seems to emerge. This leads to debate, which seems to focus on a specific set of issues that I have posed as specific questions below. I've also dusted off and enriched the wiki page and associated talk page on the matter (http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Parcel). My hope is that people can respond to these questions and we can reach a clear consensus on {whether, what sort of,conditions under which} parcel data is welcome. And of course feel free to bring up any issues that are not represented in this list. Finally, even if you believe that parcel data does not belong in OSM, but that a nationwide open consolidated parcel database would be useful (and possible:) I'm super interested in this perspective. Is parcel data useful to OSM? Can parcel data possibly be kept up to date? Does parcel data meet the on the ground verifiability criteria? Can tools be adapted to accommodate parcel data density? Brian Personally I think it's brilliant you're working on this, and I'd love OSM to work hand in hand to make it happen. Ideally I'd love OSM to be the repository for this, it helps everybody. There is speculation (but no actual statistically valid causation data) to suggest that imports somehow harm the community and, either way, it'd be great to find a way to help local communities help massage things as we pull it in. At the end of the project, say in 2030 or something, it's going to have this level of detail anyway so, I say why not start now? We've also developed a prototype 3D visualization tool (http://www.urbansim.org/Documentation/UrbanVision) to visualize parcel data, and published on using OSM data for accessibility calculations [0]. Re: [Talk-us] parcel boundaries and associated data in OSM
Before this discussion moves forward we should define what parcel data is. In my mind it's mostly-abutting polygons representing land ownership. Usually it comes with metadata about tax information and ownership information, and sometimes it has address information for buildings built on that parcel. There's simply too much data, it can not be improved by other OSM mappers, and abutting polygons are one of the trickiest types of data to get right in the OSM data format. Can parcel data possibly be kept up to date? It's possible, but very very difficult. I don't think anyone in OSM has created a reliable two-way sync between external and OSM data. Such a thing has been on lots of people's wishlists for several years. Does parcel data meet the on the ground verifiability criteria? No. I'm sure there will be at least a couple people that argue against me, but I have yet to be convinced. Parcel data is surveyed by professionals, maintained by the government, and there is very rarely a physical manifestation of the actual parcel boundary. Yes, and OSM will have to get there eventually as our data density increases, but we're not ready for it now. ___ Talk-us mailing list Talk-us@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-us

Hi Brian, I'd like to ask for some of your time to meet in person to talk more about this, as I'm the SF Bay Area, and am very interested in discussing this sort of work. Please contact me off-list if you're amenable. We can solve the problem by sitting around waiting for it to happen, or forcing the issue by going and doing this. I suggest the latter is better :-) Steve On Feb 14, 2013, at 12:49 PM, Ian Dees ian.d...@gmail.com wrote: PS: On Thu, Feb 14, 2013 at 2:41 PM, Steve Coast st...@asklater.com wrote: Brian Personally I think it's brilliant you're working on this, and I'd love OSM to work hand in hand to make it happen. I think we should start with some sort of nationwide parcel data clearinghouse. Ian made a good start with the Google Doc to document parcel data sources that could be used for obtaining site address data. My thought is we should have some kind of data catalog web app for this info, where people can register, create/update metadata records as needed, and have a bit more functionality than a google spreadsheet. There's a good bit of parcel data from govmts out there that doesn't have licensing restrictions, its cheap/free, but you have to order it and its shipped on DVD or ftp. The next step would be to obtain copies of this data and put it on the web for anyone to grab. We just need someone to host some space/bandwidth. Is that something the US Chapter can do? In addition, updates could be made whenever people get the itch. Or strive for an annual update. Updates would just be replacing the raw data. Going the next step into standardization to a common format, etc. is a huge can of worms. However, just knowing where to grab the data easily and having a central spot to grab data that isn't already sitting on the web would be a major step forward.
