- Usplash used to segfault often -- saw this in Hardy as well as Intrepid.
- Recently I switched the usplash theme and I see the behavior described by
others even after switching back to the original/default theme.

My screen (sometimes) looks like this, when i boot with verbose usplash.
I still got this with the current kernel.
Sometimes my system boots without any usplash at all, when i boot without quiet.

i have the same problem on asus f3sv. and kernel 2.6.27-7. pc beeps during
boot, pink and green colors instead of usplash.
the correct usplash appears 1 in 10 boots. sometimes it only shows a verbose
console boot.
my configuration is "splash" without quiet.

I think I've FINALLY found a answer!!! I have been following bug#246269
& the post(s) #47 by captn & #62 by chris_c "seems" to have fixed the
problem. Prior to this I tried both -5 & -6 kernels & had soild BIOS
warnings until desktop. I had noted captn's fix, but it had not worked
until I used 1024

OK--downloaded/ran the LiveCD Beta--still having the problem--usplash
had vertical red/white-green/black bars--shutdown was a solid BIOS
warning--I had to power-off the computer. If you want I will install it

other bug reports concerning abnormal behavior of usplash in intrepid

Currently booting with "splash", not "quiet splash" to keep up as to

Update: running the current Usplash & the .3 kernel-I have at times
the red/white & green/white--nothing but black---text only & sometimes a
"normal" boot with the splash--sometimes splash with colored text below.

OK--took no time at all--I went to reboot & Usplash shutdown failed--
then during boot, it went to text-only with bios warnings---dmesg.log
included---I am going to revert to "quiet splash" unless you need more

Cleaned up my menu.lst & /sbin/update-grub (removed ht=on & changed the
default naming in update-grub). Rebooted with no "quiet" or "splash"--
normal text-only boot--no problems. tested my /dev/sdc---no badblocks.
reedited the menu.lst for "splash" & got a display I have not seen for
quite a while
The "ht=on" is a remainder from a Hyperthreading cpu--I need to edit
that out. Yes, I'm using Ubuntu--the grub-gfxboot came from Debian & it
modified the update-grub in /user--I still need to change that, but I
hand change my menu.lst to Hardy/Ibex, etc anyway ;) I'll test without
quiet & splash n

Thanks for the verification. If you have time for it, it would be still
appropriate to check the last drive with badblocks. Both new and very
old hard drives are vulnerable to cluster damages. From now on, can you
look if the problem can be reproduced is you remove both "splash" and

OK--tested my 160G Samsung SATAII & my 250G Western Digital SATAII--
/dev/sda & /dev/sdb. I did not test a drive I just bought that holds my
Hardy backup install & the /home(s) for both the Ibex installs (it's
400G--3 weeks old & a Western Digital also--/dev/sdc--was running well

issue (really sounds like it). Can you boot in recovery mode and launch
"sudo badblocks -sv /dev/sda" (or /dev/hda, /dev/sdb, /dev/hdb,
