I had similar problems with the i810 driver (using an Intel 830M/MG
card) and XFree86 4.2.1 under FreeBSD 5.0. Though, the vesa and vga
drivers both worked.
You could probably get rid of the "Symbol XAA*" errors by adding a
Load "xaa" to the Module section

Ok, I'm totally stumped. I installed XFree86 4.3.0 on linux kernel
2.2.14. I ran 'XFree86 -configure' creating /root/XF86Config.new. I ran
'XFree86 -xf86config /root/XF86Config.new' to test the server and it
crashes saying no screens were found. /var/log/XFree86.0.log

ATI Radeon Mobility U1 chip (PCI id 1002:4336). It seems like XFree86
4.3.0 doesn't support this chip. Is there any trick to make this
work? Or is there some work in progress to support it?

back in March that an experimental 2D XFree86 4.3.0 patch for the
Radeon IGP sets was around, so I was wondering if those drivers have
progressed in any way, and if even there is also 3D support.

Good morning i have a problem with xfree86 grafical interface. i have red hat linux 8.0
the problem is that only the text mode start with the text console. the grafical mode
is crashed.
Is possible reistall xfree86 from the cd rom. Have you another solution to the
problem?

Use the "XFree86 -configure" option, while root, to regen your config file.
Something is wrong with your current config file.
There is also a redhat specific command for generating a configuration file.
"redhat-config-xfree86 --reconfig"

I am trying to install Xfree86-4.3.0 binary
version downloaded from xfree86.org for my laptop
running RedHat Linux-9,
when I run Xinstall.sh/exe I am getting the error as
/home/bala/xfree86/gnu-tar: Cannot change to directory
.etctmp/X11/app-defaults: No such file or directory

You never configured your X-server. Your linux distribution
probably has a utility to configure it (like xconfigurator).
You also might consider upgrading to a version of XFree86
that's not so old. If you have relatively new hardware such
an old XFree86 version may not support it.
Get rid of your Option "UseFBDev" in the XF86Config file.
It looks like your framebuffer device does not support that
graphics card. XFree86, however, should work fine without it.
