On RedHat, which I am most familar with, xfs is in it's own package and has
it's own startup script. Startx is not responsible for starting it. It must
already be running.

it's close enough. Getting 3d acceleration working
will be fugly (is GLIDE even available anymore?), but
2d should be trivial.
Failing that, try configuring it as a VESA 2.0 card,
but try the Voodoo Banshee/Voodoo3 first, it's FAR

installed the XFree86 4.2.0 binaries
