"NFPA 13, 2007
7.8.8.3 For wall protection systems, sprinklers shall be located
6 in. to 12 in. (152mm to 305 mm) from the wall surface
and within 6 in. (152 mm) of the top of the wall, with maximum
spacing of 8 ft (2.44 m) or as indicated in the sprinkler
listing for exposure protection use.

7.8.8.4 For protection of window and similar openings, listed
window sprinklers shall be positioned within 2 in. (50.8 mm)
of the top of the window sash in accordance with Table 7.8.8.4."

This kind of one of the good, better, best questions. While the pdt
will work, that is not what it is listed for. It is an area protection
sprinkler. The window sprinklers are designed, tested and approved for
a particular spray pattern which is suitable for exposure protection.

But in 21.20.1.2.1 as you stated you can achieve compliance with
standard sprinklers as long as you have met the listed criteria. It may
be more practical and cost effective to place the first row of ceiling
sprinklers close enough to the glass to protect area and surface.

Read NFPA 13, 2007, 22.7 Exposure Protection.... and you'll get more
info on this. PDT's are permitted but there are some calculation and
coverage issues that need to be dealt with. 22.7.3 specifically.

Subject: Need Help fast

I need to know if there is a code anywhere that states you can or can
not use a standard pendant head as a window wash. I have a glass wall
that I need to be fire rated and I have a contractor telling me by code
he can use a pendant head instead of a deluge head or a Tyco window
sprinkler. The only code I see that possibly address this is 21.20.1.2.1
and it only says you have to use automatic heads. Any help!!!!!
