I didn't say I agree with the use of black pipe in dry systems. I
prefer galvanized. I am just making the statement that there is no NFPA
requirement that mandates the use of Galvanized pipe in dry pipe
systems. As far as the use of black steel in dry systems being permitted
a precedent has been set in chapter 14 table 14.4.4.5 in the 2002
edition. The Hazen-Williams coefficient for dry pipe is: 100 for black
steel and 120 for galvanized.

Yes that section with that wording is just under the heading of Large
Drops. But does the same concern not apply for any other type heads on
dry sprinkler systems?

So if you take it to it's literal extreme, dry sprinkler systems that
utilize Large Drop sprinklers are the only systems subject to scale
accumulation. Scale accumulation doesn't occur or is of no importance
for standard 5.6K or 8.0K or X.XK sprinklers so no galvanized piping is
necessary per the Standard? Really? Could someone explain the logic
behind this?

If you use regular black pipe and the supervisory air supply uses
ambient air with no drier you can pretty much bet that over a period of
time the interior of that pipe will rust and scale. The moisture in the
supervisory air will contribute to that.

So then would you would have compliance issues with 8.16.4.2.

Your rust or corrosion isn't always from an external source, it could be
from inside as well.

Trying to save a few bucks at the front end could be costly down the
road. Unfortunately many will be forced to save those few bucks up
front if the code or standard doesn't particularly say it's required.

Read the FAQ information in the Handbook edition of the 2007 NFPA-13
8.4.7.2 this issue is addressed directly. "The use of internally
galvanized steel piping materials applies only where large drop
sprinklers are used. Dry pipe systems using other types of sprinklers
are not limited to particular piping material but must comply with the
requirements of section 6.3 and 6.4."

George and Craig,
Isn't this section that you referred to just for large drops?

And what Todd said about previous requirements by some insurance AHJs to
use it preceded the 2007 #13 requirement.

8.4.7.2 of the 2007 NFPA 13 states:

8.4.7.2* Galvanized Pipe.
8.4.7.2.1 Where steel pipe is used in preaction and dry pipe systems,
piping materials shall be limited to internally galvanized steel.
8.4.7.2.2 Nongalvanized fittings shall be permitted.

*A.8.4.7.2 The purpose of this requirement is to avoid scale
accumulation.

Subject: Missing

Hello sprinklerforum,

I think I am missing something. IF my old brain remembers it was a
requirement for dry pipe systems to use Galvanized Pipe, But were
allowed to use black iron fittings. I am unable to find that in the 2007
edition of 13, Am I dreaming, or was it deleted, or where is it now?
