Speaking of such test, How many systems are installed with a means to
test the backflow at the required forward flow rate? like a wall hydrant?

So it's contractual, not philosophical. Presumably, the installing
contractor tests it ...
I don't think we're talking about testing the backflow appliances itself for
functionality - that's best left for the "certified backflow
technician." If you pump up an UG including the BFP, the relief valve
will only operate when there's a differential between the clappers. So an
RPZ or RPDA usually weeps a bit when you pump it up, but once the line is
equalized you can run a conventional hydro. And if you just want to test
against it, you can pump up through the FDC or main drain or the supply-side
tap on the riser check, if so equipped.

Hello Steve,
I start 1' AFF with my work. I sub out any underground installation work I
get (which I try to avoid) and it is up to them to test it. Only question I
have is how do you get an RPZ to hold the back pressure to hydro to it? Pump
the system up through the #1 test cock?

I'll bite - why not? If the Fire Department pumps into the FDC,
isn't
it likely to back pressure the BFP to at least 150? And if so,
wouldn't
it be prudent to test the assembly?

Hello IPA,
I for one have never put 200 on the backflow, I will not either.

I've got this question posed to me:
Backflow preventor is rated at 175 (as are most of the fire sprinkler
components) yet we are required to do a 200 psi test. Is the keyword
here
"working pressure" of 175 psi or am I missing something?
thx,
