On an 8' deep vertical riser. If the first 5'-0" is C900 vertical, then you
use a MJ Sleeve to couple a flanged DIP piece 3'-6" on top up through the
floor. Your restraint rods will need to extend from the elbow at the base of
the riser up to the flange connection on top of the DIP.

Also Uni-flange and Megalug both offer several ways to put flanges on C900.

Then the rise from the base elbow must always be metallic pipe. How would
you go from PVC to steel above the floor if you don't have a flange or a
groove to work with?

Thom:

I think it does. I've allowed this when the contractors have ignored my
plans and specs and installed it "the way we always do" with the C900
through the floor.

My only hesitation comes from the fact that I never get to be on site when
the work is being done, so I am a bit afraid to allow another joint below
the slab. Still, if they install it properly, with all the restraints, etc.,
then I can 't see why it wouldn't meet minimum requirements.

Subject: 13, 2007 23.1.6.1.2

Based upon the handbook interpretation PVC (C900) cannot be used above the
floor to supply the fire systems, because it is subject to Mech. damage,
solvent attack, or corrosive solutions. And as the commentary addresses it
is not listed as "Above ground Piping"
So we have a project where one AHJ allowed the underground guy to install
C900 up to the transition to cast iron @ the backflow, and a second AHJ over
ruled the first AHJ quoting 23.1.6.1.2. (Second AHJ after rough inspection
completed by 1st AHJ) The riser is located in a very small room, and the
main under the footer is at least 8' down to the MJ 90' ell.
If the CG gets the underground guy to dig down only 3'-0" installs a MJ
sleeve, and then a Ductile Flange spool extension through the floor to the
BFP. And this entire assembly is restrained to the MJ 90' elbow at the base.

Question: Does this meet the requirements of NFPA 13, chapter 10 and 23?
(The PVC will be underground, where it's listed to be.)I personally believe
it does, but I would like to hear from you all.
