Actually it's both, but you'll not find to my knowledge any K5.6 or smaller
heads with a droplet size big enough to penetrate a large fire in a building
this high. I seem to recall that the droplets from SSU's are large than from
SSP's, but I don't remember where I heard that. Some EC heads may provide a
larger droplet size, but I really don't know. That's why I said get the PE
to tell you what will work, then it's on his insurance, at least as much as
yours.

Roland? What was that arena you did a model of with 1/2" orifice heads? 120'
AFF?

As an assembly occupancy, only requiring a 0.10 density, it's probable the
designer wouldn't look at anything larger than 5.6K unless he looked a EC,
and if the water pressure was really good, possibly even smaller than 5.6K.

Doesn't the deflector determine the droplet size more than the k-factor?

I believe that the reason that you would need the K factor is that modeling
has shown that in very high ceilings like arena's and such the droplet size
is very important if you want the water to reach the floor in a fire, and
not just be steam 30' AFF.

I agree it should be the PE, not the AHJ deciding this, without further
guidance in the standards. The important thing for the AHJ is to recognize
the potential for failure if you simply "Provide coverage per the code".

"Start with checking with the AHJ & see what k-factor they require"

Why in the hell would an AHJ be giving a k-factor????? Does this even make
sense?
I would tell you to provide coverage per the code, and if it is not in black
and white in the code, then have an engineer tell me what/how you are going
to protect it.

George, I did an omni max dome a few years back so I know what you are up
against. Start with checking with the AHJ & see what k-factor they require
for a 60' high ceiling, thats the first problem. One way or another you have
to cover all the floor area, if that can be done with heads only above the
screen then you're in business.
