The Performa CD is causing you problems- it is looking for specific
items known to be installed in a performa 6400
computer and not finding them on your Umax, thus the error messages. You
should be able to download a generic
version of 7.5.3 from Apple's website. You'll still need drivers for non
supported CD and HD's, so why not just upgrade
to the generic version of OS 9.1 sold by Old World Computing and others?

Nancy, I've been able to install System 7.5.3 Rev. 2 using a Performa 6400
Series System/Software CD with many errors (damaged disk). It does have the
original CD drive that came with it, and it does boot the Performa CD from
it. I would like to reinstall System 7.5.3 using the installer due to many
files missing from the hard drive. I don't know the rules on posting links,
but I have some screenshots posted up on my forum, I could give you the link
if it is allowed. Also, for some reason I can't use any CD unless the
Performa CD was in the drive at system boot, and then I could remove that CD
and insert another. In addition, it for some reason doesn't recognize Audio
CDs. Thank you for taking the time to read all of this.

info it says
PowerMac, any ideas?

If you haven't already, I'd check that earliest system usable on
the C500. It's possible that it needs 7.5.5 at minimum or
something even more recent. Kennedy's site probably has that info.
Another possibility is if you have a G3 upgrade installed it could
be confusing the installer. If that's the case, try putting the
original 603 processor back in.
Sorry I am late in reading this. Our c600 shipped with 7.6.1.
Hotmail, did you find and install an Apple CD drive, or are you
trying to use the original one that came with the UMAX. Early
versions of the OS would not install using the stock UMAX CD drive.
You needed something like FWB's CD-ROM Tool Kit to get the machine to
boot from an Apple software install CD.
You might also need to launch Drive Set Up (should be in the
Utilities Folder) and format the Hard Drive so it is recognizable.
