The OS installed just fine, it's just that the CD was so damaged
it couldn't install all of the required files. And as for using a
generic version of 7.5.3, i tried that and it said that it doesn't
recognize that macintosh, i have a screenshot posted on my message

I think many swap out the original CD drive for an Apple one to
avoid driver issues. You really do need 3rd party software for the
drive to function fully otherwise. I think the reason that it sorta
works if there's a disk in the drive at boot is that there may be
some limited driver somewhere (possibly in the device) that loads
under those conditions, kinda like
being able to run a Zip drive without loading a driver at boot with
a disk inserted, or running a monitor on a PC at 640x480 with
limited colors without the proper
software.
It won't do audio CDs for the same reason.
There used to be a hack of one of Apple's drivers available. If you
can get a hold of a copy of that, you might be in business as well.
Does anyone remember this file and still have a copy?
I never tried the Apple Driver Hack. As Steve mentioned, we
replaced the original CD-ROM with an Apple ROMed drive. You should
be able to find one for almost nothing. Pretty much any SCSI CD-ROM
out of any older Mac will do. In the meantime, there is a copy of
FWB CD-ROM Toolkit 2.3.2 on the SuperMac Insider site. It is listed
as a Full Installer (Not compatible w/HFS+ or Mac OS >8.1) The
"insider" is located here <http://home.earthlink.net/
~supermac_insider/support/index.html> You probably need some of the
other software that is listed (depends on the hardware you have).
I don't think your Performa install CD is damaged, I agree with
Steve, in that it is looking for a Performa and not finding one.
Especially since you are using a software restore CD, rather than a
software install CD. Apple system restore CDs are machine specific.
The generic OS 7.5.3 is probably not working because the hard disk
needs to be formatted. Our c600 came with FWB's Hard Disk Tool Kit.
I don't remember at what point you could use Apple's Drive Setup to
erase, format, and install drivers. You are going to need a third-
party disk formatting utility to format the hard disk before the
generic installer will work.
A few messages back Paul recommended you find a copy of OS 9 and
install that. Quite frankly, I agree with him. Even OS 8.5, with
the free upgrade to 8.6 would be nicer than 7.5.3. I just did a
quick check of ebay, and there are a number of retail copies of 8.5
listed. You can pick up a copy for under $20.
