As you can see in the code below there are 4 possibilities atm.  I intend

Purely logically these pairs of SINGLE characters are far preferable to 
multi-character pairs!

Multi-character pairs will be prone to typing errors ... For instance  ...

This /°.n6 looks nice enough°/ for reading

But could very easily get yourself in a knot.

This /°.n6 looks nice enough°/ for reading till you make a /°small/° error.

*Having multi-character pairs should be avoided.* Especially for *inline 
markup* where typos and other errors are harder to spot.

Using a pair of SINGLE unique characters is by far better as their use is 
immediately determinate and less verbose.
