Once upon a time Dave Schultheis shaped the electrons to say... > I do *not* want a set-top "cable box" that requires me to change > channels with a Comcast remote control device.
Why not? Functionally it is no different from what you're going to have to do with the DTA - using the TiVo IR blasters. And the cable box may allow you to access more content than the DTA. A DTA is really just a kind of dumbed down cable box. Unless they'll charge you for the cable box and the DTA is free, then I could see going with the free option. > Today I plugged and screwed everything in, and guess what? The DTA > does *not* pass everything through to the TiVo. It is necessary to > change the channels by using the Comcast remote on the Comcast DTA box. Yep - it has to know what digital channel to tune and convert for analog output. There is no way it can 'pass through' everything unless it could tune every channel and convert them all to analog at the same time, then remodulate all of them into an analog cable signal. Which would be a pretty impressive, and expensive, piece of hardware. All a DTA is is basically a digital cable tuner with an analog converter and RF modulator if it has an RF output. Which is most of what a cable box has, hardware-wise. > It appears to me that I will have to find the box that my TiVo came > in, then find the infrared sending wire with the PURPLE plug on one > end, then stick the infrared senders to the front of the DTA box in > order for the TiVo to tell the DTA box when to change channels. > Am I correct? If so, I don't like it, but it sounds like I have no > other choice. Sounds like it, presuming the TiVo can control the DTA of course. I honestly don't know, it depends on if the IR codes the DTA uses are in the TiVo's IR DB. Probably pretty good odds it uses some standard set of cable box IR codes though. -MZ -- megazone-at-megazone.org http://www.MegaZone.org/ Gweep, Geek, Human, me. http://www.GizmoLovers.com/ http://www.Eyrie-Productions.com/ -><- Hail Eris "A little nonsense now and then, is relished by the wisest men" 508-852-2171
